A very sad story in England had a good court outcome the other day: The mother of a boy who ran into the street and got seriously injured by a car (at age 8) was found NOT guilty of his accident -- something the insurance company had accused her of, because she wasn't with him at the time:
Think about what the insurance company had been implying: Anytime anything bad happens to a child, it is the parent's fault for not being there.
That is dramatically changing the definition of parenting from, "Gradually giving our kids more independence," to, "Never giving our kids independence, because we cannot guarantee it will be 100% safe every day, every way."
Thank goodness for a sane ruling in an era so insane that a mom not with her child was being accused of the crime of being absent.
It is not a crime to be beyond reach of your children for part of the day. Let's remember that.
Let's enshrine that. - L.
