What should a 10 year old and an 8 year old know before they head out to roam the neighborhood on their own? So far, mine know:
My phone number (and name, of course)
Our street address
How/when to dial 911 — but they don’t carry phones
Street crossing safety and locations of friends’ houses
Never to go somewhere with an unauthorized adult
What should I add to their arsenal? I’m sure I’m missing something obvious.
I think you got everything. 🙂 How is it going?
We go over a map/directions and what to do if someone gets hurt or they need help. Same for going to the park. I like them to go together so someone can go get help since no one else is outside 🙂
make them walk or bike
Yep, verbally rehearse a couple scanarios. Once my daughter and her friend were supposed to get off the school bus and meet myself and her mom at the high school stadium where we were coaching. They couldn’t find us immediately, so one ran a mile home and the other sat on a bench to wait. We had to go over a plan after that they were supposed to stick together and not leave the area where we had designated to meet. But it was a good lesson!
