NOTE: THE NYC MEETUP DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO SUNDAY, DEC. 9 at 2:30!
NYU Prof. Jonathan Haidt, a co-founder of Let Grow, is going around the country -- and world -- discussing the book he co-authored with Greg Lukianoff: "The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas are Setting up a Generation for Failure." Below, he summarizes the parenting section of the book and admits that it is hard for parents to fight overprotection on their own. But if parents go to the schools and have them do the Let Grow school initiatives -- The Let Grow Project (kids' homework is to go home and do something on their own) and the Let Grow Play Club (the school stays open 3 - 6 for mixed age, device-free, free play) -- a whole school-full of kids are getting a little more freedom at once, which is very reassuring (and fun) for all involved.
If you or your school would like to hear more about these programs -- which are free -- please drop us a line at Info@LetGrow.org. And if you're in New York City and would like to meet Prof. Haidt, he and I will be in Washington Square Park Sunday morning, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. [NOTE: THIS DATE HAS CHANGED! HERE ARE THE DETAILS], demonstrating how easy it is to send your kids to the playground while you sit and chat elsewhere in the park! Details and RSVP here. Here's to resourceful kids! - Lenore
