What do they remember about the way they grew up? Freedom. Freedom to roam, to make friends, to come up with something to do, to play without adult supervision.
Interestingly, Long Island is taking the lead in re-introducing that freedom with many schools starting the Let Grow Project and Let Grow Play Club. The first district was Patchogue-Medford, but others have followed.
Kids need free time to develop their insides -- their interests, their resilience, their talents beyond the ones that get grades or trophies. Not that every kid with a stick ends up doing schtick, or every kid with a rock ends up a rock star. But...it couldn't hurt! - L
